Understanding Depression beyond the Stigma

Clinical depression is something that is often misunderstood. Depression itself is something that is inherent in every human being, and all people experience varying intensities of it throughout their lives. A person might feel low for a couple of days due to a really bad experience and may term it depression, thus in laymen's terms, the difference between sadness and depression is often muddled.

A person who is depressed usually experiences several of the following symptoms:

“1. Feelings of sadness
2. Hopelessness, or pessimism
3. Lowered self-esteem and heightened self-depreciation
4. A decrease or loss of ability to take pleasure in ordinary activities
5. Reduced energy and vitality
6. The slowness of thought or action
7. Loss of appetite
8. Disturbed sleep or insomnia.”

Having a condition like depression is similar to being trapped in a deep well, out of which you can see the light of day and prosperity but it is impossible to reach because your mind leads you to believe that there is no way out.
