Thinking back on the pace of scientific discoveries and advancements in 2020, human beings have never made more progress on a disease in a year than they did with Covid-19 last year. This year has brought many more interesting finds and accomplishments ranging from the discovery of new scientific procedures and species of animals to the detection of never-seen-before bodies in space.
1. Developing a New Map of Dark Matter
An international team led by a Penn State astrophysicist has put together a new map of dark matter in the local universe, which reveals previously undiscovered and unexplored structures connecting galaxies to one another.
Researchers built upon a previous model using a large set of galaxy simulations (Illustris-TNG); then, they selected simulated galaxies that compared to those in the Milky Way and identified which characteristics of galaxies were required to predict the distribution of dark matter.
