On the night of November 10, 1973, comedian and country musician David “Stringbean” Akeman and his wife, Estelle, walked into an ongoing burglary at their home. The two robbers they encountered shot the couple and killed them before escaping with the items they had stolen.

Who was Stringbean?

David “Stringbean” Akeman was born on July 4, 1916, in Jackson County, Kentucky. As a teenager, he learned to play the banjo and in 1943, joined Bill Monroe’s band. He gathered quite a fanbase after that, all of whom found him to be a pleasant, yet peculiar fellow. Some of his most famous songs included “I’m the Man That Rose the Mule Around the World,” and “How Many Biscuits Can You Eat.

In 1945, Stringbean married a Maury County native named Estelle Stanfill. Their friend and singer Ramona Jones described the couple as,

“sweet, gentle people that loved nature and spent most of their free time fishing on a creek.”
