By mid-November, the world’s population is expected to hit eight billion. It is projected to keep growing over the next few decades, albeit at a slower rate and with regional variations. Despite not being very well known, World Population Day is significant.

World Bank demographer Dr. K. C. Zachariah came up with the notion, predicting that the world’s population would hit 5 billion on July 11, 1989. At his suggestion, the United Nations established July 11 as World Population Day in 1989. It’s celebrated annually to shine a light on pressing population issues like poverty, human rights, and maternal health.

Historic Predictions for 2022

Facts learned from the UN report include the following: There will be eight billion people in the world on November 15, according to the United Nations Population Division, which is more than three times as many as the 2.5 billion people who inhabited the planet in 1950.

However, Rachel Snow of the United Nations Population Fund told AFP that the global population growth rate has slowed significantly since it peaked in the early 1960s.
